Why Surface Brushing Fails: The Illusion of a Brushed Coat
Many loving pet parents brush their dog every single day with a soft pin brush, only to be shocked when a groomer informs them their dog is matted.
This happens because standard brushes only glide across the top 20% of the coat. The tangles start at the skin level, where sweat, moisture, and shed hairs twist together. To verify a coat is truly tangle-free, a metal greyhound comb must be able to slide effortlessly from the skin to the tips without catching.
The Line Brushing Method
- Part the coat horizontally with one hand until you can see bare skin.
- Using a slicker brush, brush small sections downward from the skin outward.
- Follow through with a metal comb to confirm no resistance.
- Move your hand up an inch and repeat until the entire dog is combed out.
Why Shaving Severe Mats Is an Act of Compassion
When mats become tightly felted ("pelted"), brushing them out causes unbearable pain, tears delicate skin, and leads to bruising. Trapped moisture under pelts breeds bacterial dermatitis, yeast infections, and even fly strike.
In severe cases, the only humane path is for a groomer to glide a safe clipper blade underneath the matting. Hair will always grow back healthy; avoiding physical agony for your pet is what truly matters.
